Outdoor Natural Light Examples {Winston Salem, NC Photographer}

I wanted to share a few of my examples of why your Photographer may walk you to death or shoot at certain times of the day. It’s because they are hunting for great light.
I can show this bad/good example because it’s of my work – Here is an example of these beautiful girls from last weeks Wedding. We had some awesome huge clouds around 4:00. At the moment, the clouds were covering large areas at a time. So I had the girls walk over by the fence, by the time they had walked and set up… the clouds moved… producing the top image.

An average person,  can’t really tell that anything is wrong with the image, but for me… it’s a happy moment, given bad light. The bottom image is better light. If I can control the situation I will hunt for the best light for my clients. Sometimes it’s out of my control and I have to adjust settings according to the situation.

Another reason to keep in mind when you schedule your family session OR book your Venue… ask them where the Sun is at that particular time you are planning to say “I DO”. I wish The Knot would add that to their check off list. It’s something that most Brides don’t think of or even care about, but could make a difference in your images. Especially when you see/compare what you want when you see Photographers portfolio work, Pinterest or Blog Posts where some of their images are captured in great/controlled light:).

Something to consider and ask your Photographer about prior. Enjoy.

The images below are not bad images – This is only showing you where the sun is coming in from and  how the image was captured.

Clearly without being at this Wedding you can guess where the Sun is, it was high and behind them you can tell because of the shadow The Bride & Father are producing

which sometimes causes a sun flare or haze which is on the other image. In case you receive images from your Photographer that are like that… that’s what it is.

Keeping in mind where the Sun was. I knew that they would be looking right into the Sun come time for Family shots after the Ceremony.

We were on a roof top so not much choice as where to go, however there was 1 great area to work with. So I asked if we could move the Family shots over to this location and they said YES. Thank Goodness because had they not, everyone would have been squinting.  The Coordinator moved the topiaries to add to the area and the images turned out wonderful. I zoomed in a little on the Bride & her Nephew {Ring Bearer} so you can see catch light in her eyes, rather than her squinting, had we used the Ceremony area.

Different times of the day produce different light.

Just because you may think little Johnny may not cooperate around the best time of day for great light, well… the way I look at it is… give me 10-20 minutes of your time and it’s only 1 day of the Year to ask for a change in his schedule for “Picture Day” and I promise you great images.

Here are other examples of different light – which again, produces different images.

The images below were taken in a field on an over cast day.

The Images below were taken at sunset. Even though it’s still shooting at sunset, different angles {even the SLIGHTEST} produce different light/images.

The image below was shot at sunset {Sun behind trees} the image on the left was shot using a reflector, then one on the right was shot without.

The images below are taken at sunset. However this is a situation where I control the time/day/light but cannot control the Moment.  When you shoot directly in the Sun it is sort of challenging and sometimes I can’t see at all at times.  So the slightest move/position can make all the difference, but you don’t have time to set that perfect light/posed frame up when you are shooting lifestyle. It is it what it is.:o)
